Takeaway: A breeding protocol and guide for participatory carrot breeding was developed and adopted. The carrot breeding line, Fantasia, has been released through two Canadian seed companies.
Why it matters: Domestically produced organic vegetable seed improves farm resiliency and seed security.
Integrated Management of Cranberry Pests
Takeaway: A new spraying device for applying Trichogramma to cranberry fields is commercially available and being used on six organic cranberry farms in Quebec. Meanwhile, data to support registration of a new mating disruption product has been shared with industry partner, Trécé.
Why it matters: New biological and pheromone-based pest management options could help organic cranberry growers to control blackheaded fireworm and cranberry fruitworm while reducing reliance on insecticides.
Goat Immunity to Gastrointestinal Nematodes
Takeaway: The CarLA Saliva Test is able to detect variation in antibody levels in Ontario goats and there is good potential for the test to be offered commercially to goats as well as sheep. The target age groups for testing should be kids in their first year of life or yearlings in their second.
Why it matters: A simple saliva test could help goat and sheep producers identify animals with stronger natural parasite resistance thereby improving breeding decisions and reducing reliance on dewormers.
