Due to the Federal election, publication of new OSC4 resources has been on hold since late March. As of May 26, communications are back to normal and we have released two new films.
Climate-Friendly Organic Vegetable Production
Dr. Sean Smukler and his team are exploring the impact of vegetable production practices, including targeted compost application and cover cropping, on both productivity and climate. Their goal is to identify practices that improve nutrient use efficiency and carbon sequestration while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. Find out what’s going on in the lab and in the fields at the University of British Columbia and at farms across the province.
A Collaborative Approach to Improving Vegetable Varieties.
Dr. Loren Rieseberg and his team are integrating genomics, ecophysiology and farmer participation to increase the quality, quantity, and diversity of favorably adapted carrot and salad greens seed varieties. In labs at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto, the team is working to better understand how carrots adapt to different environments at the genomic and functional level. In the fields, a network of farmers (CANOVI) is helping to identify varieties with promising traits. Find out how researchers and farmers are working together to improve seed security and climate resilience.
All films in the series will be available for streaming on the Organic Federation of Canada’s YouTube playlist Captured on Film: Organic Science in the Making.
