The Organic Federation of Canada is teaming up with award-winning documentary filmmakers Tamer Soliman and Sarah Douglas of March Forth Creative Inc. to tell the stories behind the research activities in Organic Science Cluster 4.

Over the next two years, the filmmakers will visit research locations across Canada to talk with researchers about their motivations and methodologies and with industry partners about why they support the research and how it will impact the sector. In the final year of OSC4, the filmmakers will revisit researchers to find out how the research results are being used in fields, vineyards, cranberry beds and greenhouses.

Filming began mid-October on location at Dr. Liette Vasseur’s lab at Brock University and two organic vineyards partnering on her “integrative landscape” research activity. The next stop was a visit with Didier Labarre and Dr. Yosra Menchari at the Cranberry Research and Innovation Centre in Quebec where research is underway to develop integrated pest management and weed management strategies for organic cranberries. The session included filming the colourful harvest at a partnering cranberry farm.

The goal of the documentary series is to raise awareness about organic agriculture research happening across Canada, inspire continued investment in organic research, and ultimately motivate adoption of research results for more sustainable food production systems.

Stay tuned for the release of the first film later this year!

Organic Science Cluster 4 is an industry-led research and development endeavour co-managed by the Organic Federation of Canada and the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada at Dalhousie University and supported by the AgriScience Program under Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership together with over 80 funding partners.
