Farm management apps are proving to be valuable tools—not just for organizing day-to-day operations but for building long-term resilience. OSC4 researchers are helping to expand and improve digital tools to make it easier for farmers to demonstrate the environmental value of their work—whether to policy-makers, markets, or their own communities.

Dr. Hiroshi Kubota and his team are comparing reduced tillage, standard tillage and integrated livestock systems as potential management practices during the transition from conventional to organic production. Their goal is to identify best practices in their region based on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics, greenhouse gas emissions and economic outcomes. Find out what’s happening in the fields at AAFC Lacombe and in the lab at the University of Alberta.
Events: Dr. Andy Hammermeister, OSC4 Science Director, led two organic science coordination events. At the joint Canadian Society of Horticultural Science (CSHS) and Canadian Society of Agronomy (CSA) conference in Kelowna, BC, he led a workshop on “Building Organic Science”. At the SOILS FOR OUR FUTURE 2025 conference in Winnipeg, MB, he held a half-day workshop; forty-five participants discussed the practices, commonalities and differences between organic agriculture and regenerative agriculture in the context of soil management and health, as well as the role of science, and future research priorities.
